Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) - Lot 12
Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) The harvest Original work by the great poster artist. Poster model for a champagne or wine company. Charcoal and polychrome gouache on paper, signed. 62 x 18 cm (unframed, wetness, tears) "Born in Livorno in 1875, Leonetto CAPPIELLO arrived in Paris in 1895 and established himself almost immediately as one of the leading caricaturists. From 1900 onwards, he turned to posters, becoming, as he described himself, a "poster artist" until his death. For 40 years, he was undoubtedly France's greatest advertising artist, producing an impressive 1800 posters, adapting his style to the times. All his life, he sought out the "arabesque", a drawing that was always fluid, always in motion, served by a skilful composition to catch the eye of passers-by, creating an effect of surprise that they remember. It's a joyful saraband of animals, devils and Commedia dell'arte characters that he associates with a brand, engraving it for a long time to come in popular memory "Alain WEIL
