Niki DE SAINT-PHALLE (1930-2002) - Lot 95
Niki DE SAINT-PHALLE (1930-2002) Bathers, circa 1980 Polyester resin, painted in polychrome. 47 x 39 x 33 cm Signed Niki and numbered 92 /150, debossed below. Stamped "Plastique d'art. R.Haligon". Provenance: Galerie Jade, Colmar, Karin GRAFF (Accidents, scratches, restorations) This lot is presented by Frédérick et Pauline Chanoit In the summer of 1964, Niki announced to Pontus Hulten that she had just made an enormous statue, a very strange woman, 15 times as big and tall as herself, standing on her heels, with very beautiful colors. It's the first of the Nanas. She declares "they're bigger than men so they can stand up to them". Monumental Nanas were to be followed, paradoxically, by smaller, playful adaptations: inflatable balloon Nanas, jewelry Nanas, miniature Nanas. In 1968, she created her bather, dressed in floral bathing suits in the spirit of pop culture. Our sculpture, like all her nanas, expresses the irreducible joy of the artist who invents a mythical figure for eternity.
